Experimental behavior of iron-based shape memory alloys under cyclic loading histories

The present paper investigates the behavior of iron-based shape memory alloys (Fe-SMAs) subjected to cyclic inelastic straining by means uniaxial coupon experiments. tests feature round bar coupons a broad range strain histories representative earthquake loading. experimental results suggest that Fe-SMA under investigation exhibits an asymmetric stress-strain relation, with limited superelastic behavior. It was found post-yield/phase transformation alloy is both strain-rate and temperature-dependent. Quantitative comparisons structural steels nominally identical indicate that, although studied has similar energy dissipation per loading excursion respect conventional S355J2+N, Fe-SMA’s hardening response appreciably higher, leading comparatively larger elastic energies being stored.
